What is Intense Pulsed Light Therapy?Low Level Laser TherapyDermalogica Treatments

photofacial - spider veinsIntense pulsed light (IPL) is a non-invasive and non-ablative treatment that uses high intensity pulses of visible light to improve the appearance of the following skin problems:

• Vascular lesions including hemangiomas, port wine
stains, spider veins, facial redness, and
   rosacea symptoms
• Facial lines and wrinkles
• Brown spots, age spots, melasma
• Acne and facial scars
• Stretch Marks
• Removal of unwanted hair

The procedure of rejuvenating sun-damaged and aging skin is referred to as photorejuvenation or a photofacial and requires a series of IPL treatments.

How does it work?

Muskoka Laser Clinic and Wellness Centre’s state-of-the-art IPL system works on the same principles as lasers in that light energy is absorbed into particular target cells with colour, such as hair, blood, and melanin, also known as “chromophores” in the skin. When light energy is absorbed by hair, blood or melanin cells, it is converted into thermal energy, which in turn causes thermal damage to these specific chromophores. IPL systems are different to lasers in that they deliver many wavelengths (or colours) in each pulse of light instead of just one wavelength. Our IPL system uses highly-advanced filters to refine the energy output for the treatment of certain areas. This enhances penetration without using excessive energy levels and ensures that only the desired chromophores (hair, blood vessels, and melanin) are targeted during treatment, and that healthy skin cells are left untouched and intact.
Furthermore, IPL therapy is a non-ablative resurfacing technique, which means that it targets the lower layers of skin (dermis) without affecting the top layers of skin (epidermis). As a result, IPL is an effective and safe treatment that requires little to no down-time. Many of our clients can have their treatments during their lunch break and return to work immediately afterwards.

Photo facials are among the most innovative and effective of all skin rejuvenation services in the industry. A series of Photo facial treatments spaced approximately 3-4 weeks apart will result in a more evenly-toned, and youthful appearance. Furthermore, Photo facials can photofacial - spider veinssignificantly diminish sun damage and treat a variety of skin problems, such as:

  • Spider veins
  • Uneven pigmentation
  • Solar damage
  • Mild acne scars
  • Enlarged pores
  • Dull complexions
  • Flat pigmented lesions and brown spots
  • Red flushing skin
  • Rosacae redness
  • Fine lines (rhytids)

Through the use of sophisticated Intense Pulsed Light/Laser technology, your Muskoka Laser Clinic IPL Specialist will expertly distribute precise amounts of light energy through the skin’s surface to promote the production of collagen. As new collagen forms, it begins to improve the appearance of aging, and damaged skin. Fine rhytids (lines) are softened and the redness caused by Rosacae and sensitive skin can be substantially aleviated. Photo facials provide a more youthful appearance and improve skin texture with absolutely no downtime, allowing you to return to your normal activities immediately!

How do MLC Photo facial treatments work?photofacial - Rosacae

Muskoka Laser Clinic’s intense pulsed light technology releases exact doses of light energy to the skin. During your treatment, light energy is softly delivered through a special hand-piece to the targeted area. After any of your treatments, it is essential to follow all home care instructions given by your Muskoka Laser Clinic IPL/Laser Specialist, including the use of sunscreen and refraining from any heat-producing activities (i.e. cardiovascular exercise, hot baths, etc.) for at least 24 hours.

Regardless of age, skin type or lifestyle, approximately 80% of the world’s population will suffer from acne at some time in their lives. Most mainstream medical and over-the-counter acne treatments are either ineffective or result in serious and bothersome side effects. Microdermabrasion is the new “lunch time” procedure of professional mechanical skin exfoliation. It stimulates the production of new collagen, and is less aggressive and safer than laser resurfacing. Muskoka Laser Clinic uses only the most advanced diamond-tip Delphia™ microdermabrasion technology to provide you with the ultimate professional exfoliation experience. This MLC procedure requires no anesthetic or downtime and can literally be done over your lunch hour. During your microdermabrasion treatment at Muskoka Laser Clinic, a diamond-tipped wand, attached to suction is passed over your skin, during which the outer keratin layer of your skin is removed. MLC’s Delphia™ Diamond Microdermabrasion technology can improve the appearance of a variety of skin conditions:

  • Brown spots
  • Shallow acne scars
  • Hyper pigmentation (melasma)
  • Sun-damaged skin
  • Dull or aging skin
  • Fine lines and rhytids
  • Uneven skin tone and texture

While the effects of microdermabrasion are not as dramatic as those of laser resurfacing, recovery time after microdermabrasion is much quicker, and poses substantially less, if any risk of infection and scarring. While some patients experience a slight “pinking” of the skin, patients can generally resume all of their regular activities immediately afterwards. Following your first microdermabrasion treatment your skin will be both smoother and more radiant than ever.

How does laser hair removal work and why is it safe?

IPL Lasers have been used for over a decade for a variety of medical cosmetic procedures including the treatment of facial and leg veins, age spots and smoothing fine lines on the face. Muskoka Laser Clinic utilizes state-of-the-art technology to customize your treatment depending upon your skin type and hair density. Our IPL laser hair removal systems emit a precise beam of pulsating light that passes through the skin to the hair follicle where the energy is absorbed by melanin (or pigment) that gives color to the hair shaft. The IPL laser’s energy is then absorbed by the pigment in the hair and transferred to the surrounding hair follicle.

Who can be treated?

The unique design and long wavelength of our IPL lasers at Muskoka Laser Clinic allow us to treat patients of most skin tones and types.

What areas can be treated?

IPL Laser hair removal can be performed on almost any area of the body for men and women – from small areas such as your upper lip, underarms, bikini area, chin, neck, and face, to larger areas such as arms, chest, back, legs, buttocks and abdomen. Facial and bikini area sessions are usually completed in less than 5 minutes; while legs and larger areas can take longer.

Will laser hair removal work for me?weight loss

The procedure varies from patient to patient depending on the amount of hair and the area treated. Generally, your Muskoka Laser Clinic treatment will begin by trimming away or shaving the hair above the skin to be treated. Protective glasses will be provided to shield your eyes from the laser's bright light. Next, the IPL laser's hand piece will then be applied to the skin to deliver the pulses of light needed to begin disabling your unwanted hair. The best results have been achieved on dark, coarse hair, but other factors may influence the treatment process, and are generally best evaluated and discussed in person. We offer complimentary consultations.

How many treatments will I need?

The numbers of treatments you may require for optimal long-term benefits depend on the area you wish to have treated, the hair density and your hair’s growth cycle. Your hair grows in cycles and many factors influence its growth. Age, ethnicity, weight, hormones, diet, medication and metabolism all play a part in your hairs’ location, thickness and resilience.  Most people require an average of 6 treatments to achieve desired results.
The IPL laser is most effective at disabling "actively growing" hairs during treatment. It is during the “anagen” growth phase that the hair shaft contains the greatest abundance of melanin, the target of the laser light. Many hair follicles are in their resting or regressive stages at any given time. The length of the growth cycles also vary slightly by body area. Your treatment plan will be customized to obtain optimal results.

Hair grows in cycles. The IPL laser is only effective on hair in its actively growing phase or “anagen” stage. At any one time there will only be certain hairs in that growing phase. This means that consistent treatments at appropriate intervals are absolutely necessary for the best possible results. The number of treatments required depends upon your skin, hair colouring, coarseness of the hair and density per treated area.

The IPL laser hair removal system causes permanent reduction in the number of hairs growing in an area. Because hair grows in three phases, and each hair goes through these stages independently, it is almost impossible for one IPL laser treatment to permanently reduce all hair in a given area. Clinical studies which have followed patients for one year after completing two treatments, have shown that reduction in hair growth was stable for the duration of that time. While individual results may vary, patients typically find that it takes 6 to 8 treatments to get the desired results. Because of the natural growth cycles of your facial hair, six treatments spaced 4 weeks apart are generally required for a completely successful course of IPL laser hair removal treatment.

Are there any restrictions on my activity after treatment?

You can return to work or resume normal activities immediately following your IPL laser hair removal procedure. However, since some redness may occur, you may want to plan your work or social engagements accordingly. This may last from a few minutes to several days depending on the area treated and your skin's sensitivity.

What about side effects?

Most people experience no side effects at all, though few exhibit some short-term localized reddening of the surrounding skin. You can return to your regular activities immediately after treatment, although it is advisable to keep the skin protected from exposure to direct sunlight for a short period of time.
